The best ancient beauty secrets you need to know

It’s no surprise that women love to be admired for their beauty and women from ancient world were no exception. The beauty, youth, and elegance played a major role in ancient civilization. They possessed knowledge of natural remedies and beauty rituals for radiant skin and glossy hair. Let’s discover the beauty secrets of Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, and The Roman Empire.

Egyptians beauty secrets

Hair and makeup

Egyptian women often liked their hair long, smooth or with long natural curls. During the Old Kingdom period, they preferred short or chin length bobs. To style their hair into the particular position, they used a sort of hair gel that contained fatty acids of animal and plant origin.

To avoid having gray or white hair, Egyptians used henna or covered their head with wigs. Wigs were very popular in ancient civilizations and Egyptians were true masters of making them into perfections. The most expensive wigs created for Royals looked like real hair. They made them from human hair and vegetable fiber such as sheep’s wool and linen. The wigs had a structure similar to helmet. They decorated them with jewelry and precious stones and colored them with brightened blue, red or green. In ancient Egypt, a number of wigs they owned showed their position in society.

ancient beauty secrets

Ancient women applied natural oils like almond oil, castor oil or rosemary oil to stimulated hair growth. They also believed that using seeds of fenugreek is a wonderful remedy to encourage hair growth. Egyptian women used the mixture of castor oil and honey as a treatment for damage and dry hair.

The makeup application was important to ancient Egyptians. They used sulfites and malachite mineral as eyeshadows and liners. They used lip color with red and purple dyes from iodine, carmine beetles, and seaweed. Egyptian women used red ochre as a lipstick.

Skincare was crucial in ancient Egypt. The pharaohs, who seek youth, health, and beauty, initiated a lot of research into herbal skincare routines. Thanks to artifacts from uncovered burials we have knowledge about beautification rituals in Egypt.

ancient beauty secrets

Egyptians had to protect their skin against dry, harsh, desert climate. Both men and women used vegetable oils like olive oil or almond oil as a moisturizer. Fragrance oils like frankincense and myrrh become favorite ingredients for perfumes, skin care treatments, and dental hygiene.

They added Dead Sea salt to their baths for its amazing health benefits. It relieves stress, has calming effects and helps to treat skin diseases like psoriasis or eczema. Honey and milk baths were also popular for their anti-aging properties.

As exfoliants Egyptians used sea salt, sand or aloe vera to get a smooth and soft skin.

Sugaring was a natural method of hair removal. They mixed sugar, lemon, and water and formed a paste that was applied to hair. This method still exists today and is favorite among estheticians.

Rose water with her anti-aging properties dates back to ancient Egypt. Egyptians used it to reduce wrinkles and close skin pores and as a cleanser.

Greek beauty secrets

ancient beauty secrets

Youth and physical beauty played a significant role in ancient Greek society. Greeks were masters in seeking ways how to combat a body’s natural aging process and improved their appearance. There is no surprise that the word “cosmetics” actually comes from the Greek word “kosmetikos”.

Greek women used a mixture of charcoal and oils as dark eyeshadows, clay, and red iron to color their lips and crushed mulberries for lip and cheek stains.

Elixir of life

The olive oil was very popular in Greek beauty remedies. They called it “Elixir of life” and the olive tree was considered sacred. Greeks used olive oil to get and maintain smooth, healthy and radiant skin. They also crushed leaves of the olive tree to make a facial paste to prevent spots and pimples. The mixture of olive oil and honey was a traditional treatment for smooth, acne-free skin. Applying a facial mask from seaweed was also a favorite way to get skin glow.

To achieve pale skin, that was considered as a sing of prestige, they smeared their faces with white lead which was highly toxic, and many Greek women died after its application.

Greeks used lemons or vinegar with the help of sunbeams to lighten their hair. After this often aggressive procedure, they restored damaged hair with masks from plant oils.

Roman beauty secrets

Bathing rituals

The hygiene was very important for Romans. They met and relaxed in large bathhouses that were decorated with beautiful mosaics and paintings. Their favorite bathing rituals included hot and cold immersion therapy, steam therapy, body scrubs, and massage.

Same as the Queen of the Nil, Cleopatra, Romans believed that bathing in asses milk helped them to reduce wrinkles and get radiant, smooth skin. According to Pliny the Elder Poppea, a beautiful and ambitious wife of Nero, loved asses milk baths because it “erases the facial wrinkles, makes the skin more delicate and maintains the whiteness.”

Romans also liked to smell good and loved their perfumes with a variety of flowers and herbs like almonds, rose petals, lilies, myrtle, and jasmine.

Roman beauty tips

To achieve fair, a white complexion of the skin they used white lead, white marl, and chalk powder. They applied rouge from mulberry juice, wine dregs, red chalk, roses and poppy petals.

Romans also preferred pale and delicate skin. Luckily they chose safer method than Greeks. They applied chalk to their skin to whiten it, and mineral powder to draw blue lines on their arms to suggest a hint of veins beneath the skin. They used a mixture of barley flour and butter to soothe skin.

To get a glossy, thick hair Romans applied a combination of eggs and vinegar on them. They also used olive oil as a treatment for dry and damaged hair.

Roman women adored a monobrow. The thick set of eyebrows that meet in the middle was a fashion hit in ancient Roman society. If they weren’t lucky to have thick eyebrows, they would pencil it with charcoal.

What do you think about these ancient beauty rituals? Would you like to try some of them?

smoothie for radiant skin

GSS smoothie for radiant skin

Glowing skin secret’s smoothie for radiant skin helps you to improve your skin health and gives you all essential nutrients your body needs when you feel tired. This is one of my the most favorite middle morning snack.

Smoothie for radiant skin

I was thinking how I can quickly improve my skin health and also get more energy. A few weeks ago I noticed a huge difference in my skin appearance. When I was pregnant, my skin was almost perfect. Now I can see pimples on my nose and forehead and couple wrinkles around my eyes. I need them to disappear!

Our little one will be three months old in a few days, so I’m slowly getting fit again after the birth. Luckily, Roman often works from home, so when our baby girl is sleeping, I can go for a quick surf or run. Woohoo! I also realized that now when I’m breastfeeding, I tend to crave more sweets than before. I usually try to make healthy choices, but now my body often asks for a quick energy boost. So I decided to get back on track and get proper nourishment for my body and skin. And the easiest way how to get it is to blend everything I need together! So smoothie it is!

Smoothie for radiant skin

I’ve been drinking this raspberry & banana smoothie for couple days (it’s my mid-morning snack) and already noticed the difference. My skin looks much better. I guess it’s true that the best way how we can take care of our skin is from inside out! It’s amazing how a simple thing like healthy balanced diet can do miracles!

 My favorite smoothie combination:

Spinach leaves – help to prevent acne and promote cells turnover.

Avocado – protects our skin from environmental damage that leads to fine lines, wrinkles, and signs of aging.

Banana – is an excellent source of quick energy and helps to lower blood pressure.

Frozen raspberries – help to stimulate collagen synthesis which keeps skin smooth and taught.

Ginger – helps to fight wrinkles, is a great immune booster, infection fighter and has anti-inflammatory properties.

Lemon juice – is packed with antioxidants and improves skin health.

A drizzle of honey – is optional, for a sweet tooth.

Smoothie for radiant skin

If you are replacing a meal with this smoothie, try to add some chia seeds or flax seeds.

Your skin will love it!

perfect skin now

How to get a perfect skin now

Is there a way how to get a perfect skin now? Well, it doesn’t happen overnight, but with following these 11 simple steps, you can quickly improve your skin health. As a bonus, you will be healthier, happier and feel better in your body. It’s a win-win! D0n’t forget that skin is our largest organ, and it can indicate our internal health. So how can you get and maintain healthy, glowing skin?

Get your Zzz’s

perfect skin now

Studies from 2013 and 2015 suggest that poor sleep quality can accelerate signs of skin aging, weaken the skin’s ability to repair itself at night and lower satisfaction with appearance. Not to mention that you can wake up with the horrible puffiness of your under-eye bags. Getting enough of sleep is one of the most important keys to the healthy radiant skin. If you are a chronic poor sleeper make sure you have at least 7 hours of sleeping per night and you will notice positive changes very soon. Do you have a special event when you want to shine? Get a good beauty sleep to get your perfect skin now!

If you have troubles to fall in sleep creating your bedtime ritual may help you to overcome this issue. It can be soaking in a hot bath with a glass of wine, having a cup of hot chocolate while reading your favorite book or put some calming music on and just relax. Then you will sleep like a baby!

Hydrate your body from within

perfect skin now

Skin is the organ and is made of cells, just like any other part of the body. Every cell in our body is created of water, and our bodies need water to function properly. Dehydration can lead to dry, tight skin with less resilience and more wrinkles. So don’t forget to hydrate your skin from inside out. Proper hydration helps to remove toxins and waste from your skin and body and cleanse it. Drinking water is the easiest thing you can do for your overall health and skin too! It can help you to get your perfect skin now! But you don’t have to go too crazy with water, recommended eight glasses per day if you are not thirsty is enough.

The best choice is plain filtered water. If you are not a fan of it, try dilutable vegetable and fruit juices or herbal tea. Or flavor your water with berries, lemon or lime and mint or cucumber. Staying hydrated is the best way to healthy, radiant skin.

When I wake up, the first thing I do is squeezing fresh lemon or orange in the glass of warm water and drink it up. (Just be careful with citrus fruit when breastfeeding.) If you want, you can also add sliced ginger root. It does miracles, and it is a nice way how to take care of yourself from the beginning of the day!

Eat your fruits and veggies

perfect skin now

The food we eat affects our skin appearance, acne, sagging or wrinkles. “You are what you eat” is true not only in overall health and body appearance but skin health too. If suffering from acne healthy diet can help you to reduce or prevent unwanted pimples. Choosing healthy food is the best way how to take care of your skin, reduce or even prevent common skin issues. Start nourishing your skin from within and give it its healthy glow from good nutrition.

What food is not the best for your skin

Fast food, sweets, and candies and food with refined sugar like white bread, cookies, chocolate, sweetened beverages, chips or white potatoes are not good for your waistline but aren’t your skin best friends either. Food with excess sugar (with high Glycemic index) can create an increase in cortisol through a process called “glycosylation.” In this process, sugars are bind to collagen and weaken it. The result could be aging your face and worse skin appearance.

Foods high in refined sugar can also spike your blood sugar level and trigger your body to make a burst of the hormone insulin, which helps your cells absorb sugar. High insulin levels circulating in your body can increase the production of sebum, the oil produced by the sebaceous glands in your skin, that can clog your pores quickly. In the end, you can have oily skin with red swollen pimples.

As a health coach, I helped my clients treat acne through diet. After changing their diet habits, all of them noticed an improvement in their skin appearance. I recommended them to avoid foods high in refined sugar and fast foods, alcohol, caffeine and also dairy products.

What food works wonders for your skin

You can never go wrong with choosing:

  • Plenty of fresh veggies and fruits
  • Healthy lean proteins (lean beef, turkey, chicken, fish, tofu, dairy)
  • Healthy fats (avocado, nuts, olive oil, salmon, sunflower seeds)
  • Whole grain carbohydrates (brown rice, whole grain pasta, whole grain bread)

If you want to supercharge your skin from inside superfoods like dark green veggies like spinach, silverbeet or kale, fruits high in vitamin C like berries and citrus fruits and omega 3s found in salmon, sardines, avocado or walnuts can do miracles. For me, the easiest way how to get proper nourishment when my skin is tired is to mix baby spinach, banana, lime juice, avocado, ginger and frozen berries in a smoothie. It is simple, quick and delicious. If you have a sweet tooth quality dark chocolate is an excellent choice! It contains cocoa flavanols, plant compounds with antioxidant properties, which help hydrate skin and improve circulation.

Give it a shot, and you will be amazed how huge effect has good nutrition on your skin appearance. Giving your skin and body all essential nutrients they need is the best thing you can do for yourself.

Get moving

perfect skin now

That’s a right babe! Don’t be lazy and get sweaty at least 45 min five days in a week. Stimulating your blood flow through being active is the best way to get your perfect skin now. As a bonus, you will get more energy and your dream body, increase your productivity and improve your sleep.

Sounds amazing, doesn’t it?

You don’t have to sweat in the gym if it’s not your thing. Just put comfy clothes on and go to nature. Walk, run, dance, just enjoy the movement and do what makes you happy!

I love water sports like swimming and surfing (I’m still a beginner, but very passionate one). I also stretch my body whenever I can. If you feel tired, stuck with ideas or just uncomfortable, do some quick and easy stretching exercise. It will refresh you immediately and ease the pain.

According to research from 2014 presented at last year’s annual American Medical Society for Sports Medicine meeting, inactive peeps who started exercise regularly experienced a reversal in their skin’s signs of aging. In fact, their skin under the microscope “looked liked that of a much younger person.”

Be gentle

perfect skin now

Using too many products, the ones with harsh chemicals or over-exfoliate your skin can lead to increased microscopic inflammation that can swell the surface of the skin, clogging pores and increasing blemishes and redness. The best what you can do is find natural products which work best for you, do not overuse them and limit exfoliating to once a week.

The word “organic” is currently one that sells. Everything organic is supposed to be better for our health and the health of our planet. But not everyone believes in it. Why should we go natural and choose organic when it comes to skincare products?

Organic skincare means going back, to our roots, to the mother of nature. Natural skincare products contain only the freshest, most naturally-sourced plants and herbs. Besides, there aren’t any harmful chemicals that could affect or inhibit the natural oils produced by the skin or damage epidermis, the outer layer of the skin. What I love about natural skincare is the fact that there is no need of using “corrective cosmetics,” because organic products improve the skin from within.

The key to the healthy and radiant skin to find the right cosmetic products for your skin tone. Everyone is different. What suits your sister, friend or colleague doesn’t have to be the best choice for you. Don’t be afraid to experiment and find which products suit you best. You and your skin deserve the best care!

Keep your skin moist

Regular moisturizing helps to prevent and treat dry skin, protect sensitive skin and improve skin tone and texture. Moisturizers slow down water loss through the superficial layers of the skin and strengthen your skin barrier. It also helps to protect the outer layer of the skin from harmful effects of sun, wind and other environmental factors.

You can have, normal, dry, oily, mature, sensitive or acne prone skin. The key is to find the best moisturizer for your skin tone that works best for you and does make your skin smooth and soft. Avoid moisturizers containing harsh chemicals at any costs. The natural ones are the most gentle option for your skin.

I always apply moisturizer after taking a bath or washing my skin. Currently, I use jojoba oil on my face and coconut oil on my body. I also love almond, rosehip and olive oil. And I’m always keen to experiment!

Protect your skin from sunlight

perfect skin now

Sunscreen is your skin best friend not only in summer! Now when I live in a sunny Australia, I never leave home without applying sunscreen with high SPF on my face! It works as a shield from harmful UV rays, prevent premature aging and sunburns and lower skin cancer risks.

Natural sunscreen provides physical mineral protection rather than a chemical barrier for absorbing harmful UVA and UVB rays. There is a discussion about retinyl palmitate, the ester of retinol – vitamin A and palmitic acid, and its possible link to skin cancer. According to the Environmental Working Group products with retinol palmitate may be encouraging the formation of malignant, potentially cancer-causing cells in the skin. Whether it’s true or not, the best way how to avoid the risk is choosing a natural organic sunscreen that doesn’t contain vitamin A.

Wash your face every day

Before bedtime, we usually wash our face to remove makeup, excess oil and dead cells that could weaken our skin. But did you know that cleansing your face in the morning is also beneficial? Splashing our face with cold water give us the fresh start of the day. As a bonus, it removes any toxins the skin eliminated during the night and refreshed the skin.

Never pop pimples

Going to the mirror without scratching that red swollen whitehead pimple or blackhead sounds impossible, right? I know what I’m talking about! I’m addicted too! But it is worth to avoid this temptation! Squeezing and popping can push pus and bacteria deeper into the skin. You are also irritating the skin and increasing the risk of infection. It can cause more unwanted swollen and redness and leave you with permanent pit or scar at the end. So hands off, lovely! It’s alway better to find a safer way how to treat zits.

Stop smoking

In addition to being bad for your overall skin, smoking can have a negative impact on your skin health. Smoking chronically deprives the skin of oxygen and nutrients that can lead to poor skin tone, wrinkles, sagging skin, age spots, line around the lips and greater risk of developing psoriasis.

Calm down and relax

perfect skin now

Is there mind – skin connection? Can your emotions have an impact on your skin? The experts say, they do! Chronic stress can increase a production of cortisol in your body, a hormone that can break down elastin and collagen, and cause premature aging and worsening certain skin conditions, like rosacea or acne.

There is plenty options how you can relax. For me, the best way how I can clear my mind is being in the water. Observing the underwater life while diving or snorkeling or catching waves is a kind of meditation for me. When you do something you love, it can be anything like cooking, reading a favorite book, playing video games or rock climbing, it’s amazing how you have no idea what time is it and just enjoy what you are doing.

If you need calm down quickly the best way is to connect with your inner self at least for couple minutes. Find a quiet place alone, switch all electronic devices and just be at the moment. Deep inhale and exhale works great to calm down immediately!

And that’s all so far. I can’t wait to hear your experience and tips how did you get your perfect skin now!

natural oils to fight oily skin

Best 6 natural oils to fight oily skin

Fighting oily skin with oils? Sounds crazy, huh? If you struggle with oily skin and clog pores is going natural the best way how to win this battle. Natural oils are great moisturizers that help to keep the skin smooth and healthy. The key is to choose right oils for your skin type.

Maybe you also experience this – applying expensive cosmetics products on your face that promised eliminate the shine and reduce oil production. You try them all, with no result. In fact, some of these synthetic products could make it even worse as they contain ingredients that trigger oil production and irritate the skin. I wish someone would tell me this when I was a teenager! Going natural is a safe and gentle way to get a healthy, radiant and smooth skin.

So which natural oils can help you to fight oily skin?

Jojoba oil

natural oils to fight oily skin

I love jojoba oil! It helps to control the production of sebum and has great regenerating and anti-inflammatory properties. It also helps to calm, protect and soften the skin. Its composition is very close to that of human sebum, so it tricks the skin to produce less oil. It contains Vitamin E and natural sunscreen. Especially in summer, it is a win-win! Let’s make it clear – jojoba oil is a wax that is liquid at room temperatures. It is light oil with yellow color that is easily absorbed.

Hemp seed oil

natural oils to fight oily skin

Thanks to its regenerating, softening, firming and healing properties the hemp seed oil is one of the best oils used for oily and acne prone skin. It contains Omega 6 (linoleic acid), Omega 3 fatty acids, Vitamin A and chlorophyll which gives it its dark green color with a light nutty aroma.  This oil absorbs perfectly into the skin without leaving a greasy film.

Macadamia oil

natural oils to fight oily skin

The same as jojoba oil, macadamia oil is also very close to the naturally occurring sebum of the skin. It’s hypoallergenic and regenerates, nourishes, protects, softens, heals, soothes and calms the skin. This oil contains Omega 6 fatty acid that helps to balance sebum production in the oily skin and creates a natural protective barrier. It slows signs of premature aging and improves the appearance of wrinkles, scars, and sunburn. Macadamia oil has a thick texture and is completely absorbed by the skin.

Grapeseed oil

natural oils to fight oily skin

Grapeseed oil is extracted from grape seeds and has regenerating and astringent properties. It helps to regulate natural oil production, treat acne, tight the skin, diminish dark circles and reduce scars.  It is rich in Vitamin E and quickly penetrates the skin due to its light and thin consistency.

Hazelnut oil

natural oils to fight oily skin

This oil is great for oily skin, dilated pores and blackheads and has purifying properties. It helps to eliminate blackheads, control the production of sebum, nourish and protect skin and makes the skin more supple. It is usually made from roasted hazelnuts, has a stronger aroma and contains Vitamin A and E.

Rosehip oil

natural oils to fight oily skin

Rosehip oil was the first natural oil that I tried, and I couldn’t be happier with the result! It is a perfect oil for oily skin. It can deeply penetrate the skin and help to get rid of the excess oil from the face. Rosehip oil also contributes to heal, regenerate and hydrate the skin and acne scars will fade faster. It has anti-aging properties and may reduce wrinkles. This oil contains Vitamin E and C, Essential fatty acids and Lycopene, the antioxidant, that helps to prevent premature aging and improve skin texture.

How to keep your skin glowing while traveling

How to keep your skin glowing while traveling

Who doesn’t love traveling? Our skin! Traveling, especially in airplanes, can be very exhausting for our skin. Fortunately, there is a way how to avoid dehydrated, dull and aged skin after landing and arrive refreshed and looking fabulous! So how to keep your skin glowing while traveling? Check my simple skincare tips.

I’m so lucky that traveling is an essential part of my life and I love it! It’s so exciting, discovering new parts of the world or going back home to hug our loved ones. But spending long hours in the plane can be also exhausting and tiring. For example, my last flight took me 34 hours when I was traveling from Europe to Sydney.

Flying has its own specifics, the high altitude and pressurized, recycled air surrounding you on the trip. The extremely low humidity in plane cabins can cause dehydration of our skin very quickly. So my dry skin quickly becomes drier and drier. Surprisingly if you have an oily skin, you are not safe too. If your skin is dehydrated and loses water, it starts to produce more oil to combat the dryness. Sound crazy, right? But don’t worry, I get you covered!

healthy skin while traveling

Here are my beauty survival simple tips for healthy and glowing skin while traveling:

Pack your beauty bag

Being ready and having my skin care products on hand is crucial for me. Pack your beauty essentials in clear zip-lock bag so you can use them anytime you need. My travel beauty bag always contains lip balm, natural fruit oil (jojoba, rosehip or avocado oil), cleansing balm and hydrating tonic (use only when you arrive at the destination, not on the plane). And of course, deodorant, hand sanitizer, toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss. You can also pack a shower gel and take a shower in time between your connecting flights. And remember, the maximum size is 100 ml per product.

Get ready

Before going to the airport I always clean my skin and apply natural fruit oil only. When I’m traveling I always leave my skin naked and avoid wearing any makeup, foundation, and powder. It’s also a good idea to apply a sunscreen on your face and shut the shade during flight.

Hydrate and nourish

I love to order one glass of gin and tonic during my flight, but always make sure I’m drinking enough water too. I usually bring a large bottle of water to the cabin and when it’s empty I ask the flight attendant to fill it for me. When it comes to food on the plane, I have some snacks like protein bars, raw unsalted nuts and cut up fresh veggies prepared in my bag so I have a healthy option. Walk often in the aisle and stretch your body whenever you can. It’s so refreshing!

Good sleep and aftercare

When I arrived, there is nothing better than having a relaxing, hot shower. Then I clean my face from dead cells with gently scrub and apply moisturizer. I also apply a natural oil on my whole body.

And my last tip? Take a nap or long sleep. It’s so good!

So happy traveling, Gorgeous!

epsom salt bath

Epsom salt bath: Relax and heal

What is the best thing to do after long and exhausting day? Soak in a hot bath! It’s so relaxing! If you are a bath lover like me, I have a tip for you. Add Epson salt in your bath. It’s the perfect way how to calm your soul, regenerate your entire body and you will get some additional healthy goodies as a bonus.

Haven’t you heard about Epsom salt bath before?

Epsom salt is not actually salt (it doesn’t contain sodium chloride), but naturally occurring pure mineral compound of magnesium and sulfate. It was named after a bitter saline spring in Epsom, England. The amazing health benefits of Epsom salt have been known for centuries.

Magnesium level booster

Magnesium deficiency is very common in our society. If you are missing it in your diet, having the Epsom salt bath may help you to solve this problem. When dissolving in warm water, our body absorbs Epsom salt through the skin and replenishes the level of magnesium in the body.

Stress relieve

Magnesium helps to produce hormone serotonin that creates a feeling of calm and relaxation. Having a regular Epsom salt bath may help you to ease the stress and feel more energized.

Muscle and pain relieve

Some experts believe that Epsom salt bath helps to ease the pain and relieve inflammation. It’s often recommended to treat leg cramps and soothe muscle pain and aches.

Miraculous bath in pregnancy

Pregnant women often suffer from magnesium deficiency and leg cramps, poor digestion, sore muscles and back pain. Enjoying the warm bath with dissolved Epsom salt may help you to treat all these common pregnancy difficulties. It can also help you to soothe stretching skin and ease unwanted bloating.

If you are pregnant, always discuss it with your midwife and doctor before you will soak in the bath. Make sure, the water is warm, not too hot. It could be dangerous for your baby-to-be.

How to prepare your bath

Add two cups of Epsom salt to your bathtub with warm water and soak at least for 15 minutes. The salt will dissolve faster if you if you put it under running water.

You can buy Epsom salt in your local drugstore, grocery, natural food store or order it online. Fortunately, you can buy a large box for just a few dollars.

So what are you waiting for? Just soak in it and enjoy your bath! 🙂

And let me know how you like it!

You got me! I’m literally obsessed with facial oils!

Living on the Sydney beach is amazing, but not as great for my skin. Thanks to strong sun lights and salty water my skin suffers from dryness. After 2 years of non-successful attempts with a various range of conventional cosmetics products, I felt desperate.  Then I was lucky enough to spend two months in Bali. When I visited local markets I bought an organic coconut oil to give it a try. I was amazed by the result! It worked perfectly for me so I started to experiment with all types of oils. And I was hooked!

Synthetic chemicals included in conventional cosmetics contain toxins that are released into our lakes and rivers from our own bathrooms. These chemicals affect local wildlife such as fish, seagulls, or turtles. It’s a known fact that our skin absorbs up to 60% of the substances that are applied to it and the rest returns to the environment.

And, of course, natural cosmetic products aren’t tested on animals.

Does going natural sounds like a good choice for you? Great! But how you should start?

I’d imagine that it could be quite confusing in the beginning.

Let’s have a look at the most common labels in the natural cosmetic industry and learn how to understand them.

means that the product include the ingredients derived directly from plants or minerals with minimal or no processing.

But be careful! Some cosmetic companies may use only one natural ingredient in the product and may still brand it as natural. Other natural skin care products may contain natural ingredients in very small amounts without any significant skin care effect. Some companies may use the word “natural source” referring to components that they obtained in a raw form from nature, but extracted using chemical processes or transformed in some way.

refers to ingredients derived from non-genetically modified plants, grown in ecologically-friendly environments without using artificial pesticides, fertilizers, or GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms). Certified organic skin care products must adhere to strict standards for cosmetics ingredients. When trying a new product, always check if the name of any certifying organization is stated on the packaging.

Banned ingredients include:

  • Petroleum (paraffin, glycols, etc.).
  • Animals (other by-products naturally produced by animals such as beeswax, honey, milk, etc.).
  • Synthetic perfumes.
  • Colorants.
  • Silicon.
  • Toxic preservatives.

products contain only natural ingredients.

products are not tested on animals and  use the ingredients that do not contain any animal matter.

describes only plant based cosmetic products.

PETA certified

means that PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, has certified that the cosmetic brand does not test on animals.

When you are shopping for cosmetic products, be aware of possible misleading advertising claims that certain cosmetic companies use, but not all of them are frauds. It”s like when you are buying your food in the supermarket. Do your research, be well informed, and read the labels carefully!

Final tip: When you are studying an ingredient list, don’t forget that ingredients are listed from highest percentage to the lowest. Aim to choose a product with the synthetic ingredients listed mainly at the bottom, or not at all.

what is body brushing

What is body brushing: Benefits & How to

Body brushing, one of the ancient Ayurvedic cleansing techniques, is an amazing beauty trick that has great health and beauty benefits. It costs literally nothing, takes only a few minutes a day, and is so easy to do. In case you’ve never heard about body brushing, let me simply explain what body brushing is and why it should become an essential part of your daily body care routine.

The Benefits of Body Brushing

Healthy, Glowing Skin:

Dry skin brushing helps to remove dead skin cells laying on the top of your skin, eliminate toxins, and unclog your pores. Your skin can breathe easily and absorb the essential nutrients you need. It’s also a good prevention of dry skin because it supports sebum secretion. As a result, you will get a smoother, healthier and more radiant skin.

Detoxify and Cleanse Your Body:

Body brushing stimulates your lymphatic system and increases blood circulation in your body. It helps to remove dead cells and other waste from your body.

Reduce Cellulite:

As a bonus, you can also reduce the appearance of unwanted cellulite! Cellulite is nothing more than fat cell deposits stored under the skin with very poor blood circulation. Regular dry brushing supports an increase blood flow in cellulite areas and loosens up fat cell deposits. How great is that!

Refresh Body and Mind:

Add body brushing into your daily morning routine followed by an alternating hot and cold shower for a while, and you won’t need your morning coffee anymore! You will feel immediately refreshed and ready to tackle your day.

How to Body Brush

Stand up in your bathtub or shower. Take a brush in your hand and start dry brushing your body at your feet working upwards in small circles. Then work from your hands towards your shoulders. Keep brushing for  at about 5 minutes. Aim to brush always towards your heart in the same direction with your lymphatic flow. Be gentle when brushing over sensitive areas. Have a shower after brushing and then apply a natural fruit oil (like coconut oil) on your skin. That’s it!

Body Brushing Tips

  • Use a good quality, natural bristle brush and, avoid synthetic ones because they can scratch your skin badly. A brush with a long handle will help you brush your back more easily.
  • Do not brush too hard. Use a more delicate brush for sensitive areas or brush with less pressure.
  • Brush lightly around cellulite areas.

As you can see, dry skin brushing has many health and beauty benefits, from softer, more beautiful and glowing skin to strengthening your immune system. So what are you waiting for? Let’s body brush! 🙂

The natural cure for acne: healthy diet

The natural cure for acne: Healthy diet

Are you wondering how you can win your battle with pimples? Is there a natural cure for acne? Luckily there may be a way… through healthy diet!

Fighting acne can be very exhausting. I still remember how terrified I felt when I woke up every morning before I checked my poor face in the mirror. Then I spent a couple of minutes trying to cover it with heavy makeup. The idea that other people could see my real face covered with huge red pimples was unbearable. I felt embarrassed, suffered from low self-esteem and sometimes, I preferred to stay at home instead of going out with my friends.

I have tried tons of acne treatment products, but nothing worked. I felt desperate.

All I wanted was to get rid of these red pimples and have pretty, healthy skin.

If you also suffer from acne, you are not alone. Acne, one of the most common dermatological conditions, is affecting millions of young adults worldwide.

It’s a complex hormonal problem, and other factors can bring it on or make it worse such as genetics and emotional problems. It also seems that making small diet changes can help you to get rid of or at least reduce pimples on your face.

From my health coaching experience, tweaking your diet can have a huge impact on your skin health.

You can eat your way to better, healthier, acne free skin.

How great is that?

Let’s have a look at what food groups you should avoid when fighting acne:

Foods high in refined sugars and fast food

Like white bread, cookies, chocolate, sweetened beverages, chips or white potatoes raise your blood sugar level quickly and trigger your body to make a burst of the hormone insulin, which helps your cells absorb sugar. High insulin levels circulating in your body can activate production of sebum. Sebum, the oil produced by the sebaceous glands in your skin, is responsible for clogging skin pores. When pores are blocked, they can easily be inflamed – swell up and go red. And voila, the pimple is here.

Dairy products

Also, spike your blood sugar level. They can contain added hormones and growth factors that may worsen your acne. Do you love milk and can’t imagine your life without it? Luckily, there are other alternatives like soy, unsweetened organic almond or coconut milk. However, remember, if you cut out dairy from your diet, you must get calcium from other sources. Here are a few calcium-rich foods Examples: beans, sardines, almonds, dark leafy vegetables (kale, spinach, bok choy, collards), oranges, chia seeds, quinoa, and seaweed.

Many people claim that going vegan helped them to get rid of acne. Cutting out dairy, fast foods, and sweets and a following healthy, balanced diet is one of the main keys to acne treatment. You don’t have to go extremes and give up meat products too.

Caffeine and alcohol

If you are a coffee lover, I have bad news for you. Unfortunately, coffee and alcoholic drinks can mess with your blood sugar levels too. Giving up of your favorite cup of coffee or Friday night drink may be hard, but it’s worth it; believe me.

healthy diet for acne free skin

I bet you are thinking right now: “Ok Madeleine, but what I should eat instead?”

When battling acne, a healthy, balanced diet is the key. Eat a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables, swap white bread, rice or pasta for whole grain options and enjoy lean protein with every food. Don’t forget to have a portion of omega 3 fatty acids daily. They prevent inflammation and are found in fish like salmon or tuna, nuts, chia seeds or avocado.

Make these simple diet changes and keep it at least for 4 weeks long. After you notice a visible change in your skin condition, start slowly adding certain foods back in your diet to know how they work for you and your skin. If you break out one or two days later after a party or enjoying a box of chocolate, you will know what your triggers are – what food is best for you and what is better to avoid. I believe that everybody is different and knowing your acne triggers is a powerful weapon in your battle with pimples.

Be patient. Sometimes, it may take up to 12 weeks of diet change to see if a certain food is contributing to your acne. Don’t give up and eat your way in a healthy, flawless and glowing skin.

I wish you all the best and good luck on your journey to having a healthy, glowing skin!

Don’t forget to let me know about your experience. I would love to hear from you!
